NOUS Final Event: Paving the Way for a Sovereign European Cloud-to-Edge Continuum

The Horizon Europe NOUS initiative marks its final milestone, showcasing field-tested architectures, multi-agent edge intelligence, and an open-source handover to reinforce Europe’s technological autonomy.

As the EU pushes forward with its mandate for open, interoperable, and secure digital infrastructure, the NOUS project (A Catalyst for European Cloud Services in the Era of Data Spaces, High-Performance and Edge Computing) has officially conducted its landmark Final Event, held in conjunction with the DCAI 2026 conference in Naples, Italy.

Bringing together key stakeholders across industry, research, European Data Spaces, and academia, the event marked the culmination of three years of collaborative research aimed at bridging the gap between localized edge devices, cloud environments, HPC, and emerging quantum capabilities.

Throughout its lifecycle, NOUS addressed a critical vulnerability in Europe’s digital backbone: the heavy reliance on centralized, proprietary cloud architectures. The final event showcased how the NOUS modular reference architecture provides a trusted alternative through:

  • Cognitive Orchestration & Edge Intelligence: Dynamic, AI-driven workload allocation and multi-agent systems designed to compute data where it is created, optimizing energy efficiency and lowering latency.

  • Data Sovereignty & Security: Frameworks built to interoperate directly with European common data spaces (aligned with Gaia-X, FIWARE, and DSSC standards), ensuring strict compliance with European privacy and data governance values.

  • Heterogeneous Continuum Integration: Seamless bridging across edge nodes, fog environments, HPC facilities, and decentralized storage systems.

Unlike initiatives whose impact concludes with project funding, the NOUS Final Event focused heavily on long-term sustainability and exploitation. During the dedicated ecosystem handover session, consortium partners presented the transition of NOUS into an open community asset.

The project’s key exploitable results – including its core orchestration components, middleware stacks, and architectural blueprints – are being transitioned to open-source access via the project’s official repositories, enabling European SMEs, industry leaders, and researchers to adopt, extend, and commercialize the technology.

“The NOUS framework is more than a technical architecture; it represents a commitment to open digital sovereignty. By placing our findings into the open-source domain, we empower European organizations to build scalable, distributed cloud-to-edge services without technological lock-in.”
